This year’s Open Gardens

Farm Garden – Sunshine Iris Nursery & Private Garden

Mandy and Marg’s Sunshine Iris Nursery is just a short drive from Lockhart on the Wagga Road (145 Strong’s Lane), where over 300 iris and daylillies should be in bloom, creating a wonderful array of colour against the Lockhart landscape. Mandy’s garden will also be open to visitors.

Gardens are open from 10 am until 5 pm on Saturday and 10 am until 4 pm on Sunday.

For a gold coin donation on entry, visitors are invited to take a stroll around the gardens, enjoy morning or afternoon tea (for a small charge) and enjoy what the owners have created over the years.

Redbank – Farm Garden

Here is a brief description from owner Liz Lane.

Our home was built in 1916 for £420 by the same builders who built the former National Australia Bank in Lockhart, from bricks made in the Lockhart area. When we purchased ‘Redbank’ in 1987, there was very little garden, just shrubs and trees, many of which have since died or been removed.

The tennis court was the first addition in 1988, and the garden evolved around it with the help of Mandy Strong in 1990. Mandy was an inspiration with design and many cuttings. It then took a back seat with the dry year of 1994 and five children to raise.

An extension to our home in 2001 saw the garden change a little, but the dry years from 2002 until 2010 meant that only the toughest plants survived. Agapanthus down the driveway have been planted three times and the garden behind them twice.

The scrap metal sculptures and wire balls have been made by Geoff or son William, and Geoff’s love of vintage machinery is evident around the garden as well!

The gazebo near the tennis court was an old dairy moved from another property, as was the shed on the north fence, which houses old machinery. The outback toilet to the west of the shed also moved from another location. The cellar is original, built at the same time the original house was built. The original house also made from wattle and daub was removed to fit the machinery shed.

Our garden has been the setting for the weddings of two of our sons in 2016 and September 2019.
