Arts Trail and Auction

If you know what farmers can do with No. 8 fencing wire, just see what they create in "Art in the Park", an Arts Trail through the streets of Lockhart and then join in for the auction on Sunday 1pm so you too can have a unique piece of Australian Art. Pieces can be bought or you can have a silent bid placed on the day.

Art Exhibition

ELEMENTS:  With a $10,000 first prize in the form of an "aquisition sponsorship" is up for grabs, who's to know what will be around. The first prize winners work will be kept either by the major sponsor Babcock & Brown, Siemens Ltd and Bilfinger Berger Services or the Spirit of the Land Committee in our "Arts trail".

There is also an extra $5000 in additional prize money. Farm sculptures created from recycled and or new materials from elements of the land ie; wood, metal, stone. Entries for this competition can find application forms under the registration menu.

Saturday we will have 2 artists in residence offering tips and their handyworks.

EMOTION: Contemporary indigenous art works. Large display of works available showing both canvas and wooden articles. We offer you the opportunity to watch an artist in residence.

EXPRESSION: oil/ceramics/wool & glass. An array of paintings, both oil and water, ceramics, photographic displays, wool and glass works will all be available for sale.

View Doris Golder’s unique wool fibre art, with portraits of some 24 national identities such as Slim Dusty, Tim Fischer, Greg Norman, Bob Hawke and Paul Hogan. Exhibited in their own gallery at the Lockhart Museum, these works, created over many years, were kindly donated to the Lockhart Community.

Garden Art

Stone the crows! Fun, creative and entertaining displays of scarecrows. No slingshots needed here. Watch for them as you wander our streets. Definitely a treat for the young at heart. There is a theme this year lets just see what you think is the best dressed.

Brooklock Studio

Brooklock Studio offers you the opportunity to stop and shop and sip a coffee while browsing an array of hand spun woolen fibres, leather plaiting, paper making and cottage crafts. Only on Sunday10am till 12 noon. 2 kms on left on the Wagga road.

Bush Barbecue "Cook Up"

Say goodbye to your country experience with a great Aussie barbeque. Held in the back of the Lockhart Ex-Servicemens Club at 12.30pm. Come and relax with a beer and a steak then open your wallet before the Art Auction so you can take home a great piece of work.

Street Party

Turn Green Street, our Main Street, into your own dance floor. Come along and sit under the verandahs or on the street. Bring your own table and chair and just pay an admission price $12 p.p or relax and we will provide it all for you for $17 per person. This includes the entertainment and childrens rides for free. Our guest star for the night is Peter Denehy plus lots more.

Street Dinner Party

The Biggest Dinner Party in the Riverina! Bring it! Buy it! Cook it! Enjoy it! From the Great Aussie BBQ to corn on the cob, or elaborate Chinese smorgasbord, maybe a bit of excotic Egyptian or Turkish, the choice is yours! Dine under the stars, fairy lights or bring your own candelabra: It is a night for the family. Rides for the children are free while you relax and enjoy the music, singing and dancing or a friendly chat. Our guest entertainer is Peter Denahy.

Calcutta for Picnic Races

Ever wanted to own your own race horse? Now is your chance. Bet as much as you like, buy the nag of your choice. We will even round up a brumby or two. This might be your only chance to make the real money - if only for an hour or so.

It will keep you on the edge of your saddle until you ride home past the winning post. Repeat some of that experience at the Picnic races on Friday from noon.

Dunny and Shearing Shed Tours

Lockhart was once part of the famed Brookong Station, renowned for the 1888 Shearer's Strike. One hundred shearers rioted for improved conditions and this fed other riots throughout Australia resulting in the beginnings of the Australian Labour Party. An intruiging guided tour.

Urangeline Station, with its historical 100 shearer's stands will captivate imagination and interest with a live shearing experience (part of a 900 flock).

Offers those with interest in heritage and Australian architecture a chance to visit some of the districts’ oldest and most renowned shearing sheds and dunnies. Artists and photographers will have the opportunity to recreate some historical charisma on film or canvas.... or just soak up a little of our history.

Golf Tee-off & Tucker

The Lockhart Golf course will give you a taste of country hospitality offering a 9 hole & Aussie BBQ. Tee off between 9-10am 2 person ambrose $15 per person (if you don't have a friend we will find you one). Lunch only $10.

1st prize 2 $100 fuel vouchers. Major sponsor R.P.Smash Lockhart, plus runner up, nearest to the pin and novelty prizes. Watch those little white balls or our own pet echidnas might get there first!

Heritage Walk

Buy a house for $68 dollars? Not in this decade! But see what settlers outlaid for family homes and businesses earlier this century. A leisurely stroll around the streets of Lockhart accompanied by a trusty map, filled with local knowledge of many historical sites. Or take a guided tour.

View the Greek architecture of Sir Nick Laurantus with "The Rio" one of 14 picture theatres he built in the Riverina in the 1930's. Enjoy a milkshake at the famed Blue Bird Cafe.

Opening Ceremony

The formal opening. Friday morning will be an anxious moment for a few. Judges will have had their final viewing and the decision of the major and additional prizes will be announced Sponsors and artist will be invited to attend .

Festivals Australia in liaison with the Lockhart Shire Council, has sponsored John Woods a nationally and internationally acclaimed Australian artist, based in Wagga Wagga, to create a monument commemorating the Brookong Shearers Strike of 1888. Lockhart was part of the former Brookong Station. When shearers went on strike for improved pay and conditions, the Department of Justice sent in police, invoked the Riot Act and arrested many. Nine were committed for trail and sentenced to three to five years!! The strike hearalded the beginning of the Australian Labour movement.

Picnic Races

The Lockhart Picnic Races is the largest country race meeting in New South Wales. We may not have bred a Melbourne Cup champion, but this is the champion of meets for us. If you're keen, we'll help you find a brumby or two . Breaking them in is your responsibility!! Ask the bookies..... or just ask Harry. He knows all the answers.

Bring a picnic lunch, a bottle of bubbly, or some munchies. Take a marquee if you like, or a chair. Vote on the fashion stakes. Punt a little. You mightn't win on the big race but you'll be a winner on the day. This is an experience to remember!

Soaring Club

If the jump out of a plane is not for you them how about a gentle glide over the plains of Lockhart. On a beautiful day the view is magnificant. Gliding for an hour is so peaceful yet exhilarating.

The club operates from the Lockhart Airstrip, 3 kms on the Collingullie Rd, Turn left at the sign.

Glider flights will be available both SATURDAY and SUNDAY from 10am to 5pm. After release from the tow plane, try the peace and quiet of motorlss flight in a two seater piloted by one of the Soaring Club's instructors, See the beautiful vista of the Lockhart plain, Galore Hill, The Rock and Lockhart itself. Perhaps even share the sky with a soaring eagle!

Flights will b fr a minimum of 20 minutes and will cost $150. Certainly one for your "to do" list!
