Sculpture Workshops
In July the Spirit of the Land received a grant from Festivals Australia,( an Australian Government  program which supports cultural activities at regional and community festivals), to hold four creative workshops with the aim to expand the number of sculptures in and around Lockhart and the Lockhart Shire. A pre-requisite of the grant was that all of the sculptures made during our workshops had to be displayed at the Spirit of the Land exhibition.
The first workshop was with· Stephen Coburn, famous Sydney artist of “Utes in the paddock.” With the end product, after a weekend of hard work, being a 6m high giant Kangaroo with a joey in her pouch ( the body being an old red sedan). Stuart Spragg  was the winner of the National Farm Art Sculpture Award 2008 with his 3d silhouette of the shearing shed. Under his guidance, a mixed group of artists from the men’s’ shed , picnic racers and high flying motorbikers spent two days tin snipping, welding and pop riveting their artworks, as well as socialising with the Hebel sculptors while eating cake and tim tams. Stephen Hamper  was theHebel sculptor from Sydney. This workshop was a big hit with many beautiful sculptures being created, which included penguins, mushrooms, pears and Maori art. The Hebel medium must have really inspired them as the garden club have since held another workshop to continue with their creations. The final workshop was with Luke Trevaskis, our own local artist and Spirit of the Land local award winner. It was to design a Totem Pole. Each person was given a pole and they all bought their own farm junk in a box from which the created their totem. We ended up with a tooth fairy, an emu, an elephant and a few stylish ladies.
Everyone had a fantastic experience over all four workshops, and all artists found out that each has an artistic flare within them.
Thank you to all the Guest artists and the new emerging artists from the Lockhart Shire - and watch out for these eye-catching creations at the festival exhibitions!!
